Nutrition: the taking in and use of food and other nourishing material by the body. Nutrition is a 3-part process. First, food or drink is consumed. Second, the body breaks down the food or drink into nutrients. Third, the nutrients travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body where they are used as "fuel" and for many other purposes. To give the body proper nutrition, a person has to eat and drink enough of the foods that contain key nutrients.
Your diet is an important part of your treatment for cancer. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during, and after your treatment can help you feel better and stay stronger.
Organizations like the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) and The National Cancer Institute (NCI) (www.cancer.gov) have prepared information to help you learn about your diet needs during treatment and to help you cope with side effects that may affect eating. The information has been gathered from many sources and reflects the tried-and-true experience of cancer patients and the doctors, nurses, and dietitians who work with them.
A registered dietitian is your best source of information about your diet. Feel free to ask for help or advice when you need it. Writing down your questions in advance will help you make sure you get the information you need.
You can get a referral for a local registered dietitian by calling the American Dietetic Association's (ADA) toll-free nutrition hotline 1-800-366-1655. Or, visit the ADA's home page www.eatright.org.
